My Weekly Writing Update (4)

Because what's a writing blog without a writing update?

As you have seen, my main focus as of right now is If Only We, a young adult contemporary novel. I am in the process of revising and rewriting this one.

If Only We - current word count is 57,556.

AND, if you didn't see my post on Tuesday, I have FINISHED my first full write through! I haven't done much since finishing, aside from writing a couple notes to self as far as fixing issues I know I need to take care of. I am hoping to get started on my final revision before betas this weekend. I should be able to get through this a little bit quicker since everything is written out now. From what I can tell, there shouldn't be too much to change, mostly minor variations and a couple scene changes and add-ons. I CANNOT WAIT to get to this edit! Normally, I wouldn't be so excited, but since I'm *this close* to finishing completely, I want to get it done QUICKLY.

By the way, I'll be writing down my list of betas and cover reveal volunteers this weekend. If you've emailed me about either, I'll be responding to your email this weekend as well. This is actually reminding me that I need to start writing down people for my acknowledgements because I do NOT want to forget a single person who has been helping me along the way. ^_^

So..... I finished the first full write through of my book...

Oh yes.

I would just wait to tell it all on Friday with my writing update, but I thought I would let you know now that I am one big step closer to finishing. It feels good to have it completely written out... even though I still have to do a decent amount of fixing yet before it goes to the betas. I have to add in a couple things and remove a couple things that I thought of while I got further into the book. My If Only We notebook has some little notes jotted down for these things to fix. I should get it out tonight and write down some of the things I've been thinking about since I finished so I can get to work on it straight away... and *crosses fingers* possibly have it ready beginning of February...?

Oh, I hope so!

Speaking of which... I'll be posting a post specifically for this when I have finished the final revisions... but just to let you guys know, I am looking for betas! I have three so far and could use a few more. So, please email me at and I will put your name on the list. I'll also be needing a few people for the cover reveal once I get the cover made... so, email me if you're interested in that too!

I'm also close to finishing getting my Facebook page set up. I want to make sure that it has all the pertinent information. Expect a post on that soon too.

Anyways... that's all for now my lovely friends!

My Weekly Writing Update (3)

Because what's a writing blog without a writing update?

As you have seen, my main focus as of right now is If Only We, a young adult contemporary novel. I am in the process of revising and rewriting this one.

If Only We - current word count is 56,728.

............................that's right.

I just pulled off 6675 words in ONE WEEK. Heck to the yes.

I didn't WRITE that many words in one week, I revised most of them from scenes I had already written. I had a horribly difficult time on Wednesday night because I had changed a couple scenes near the beginning and it wasn't meshing with the final scene. So I was like, "WHAT THE CRAP, JESSICA?! WHY DID YOU ADD THAT STUFF TO THE SCENES EARLY ON?! YOU'RE RUINING THE END!!!!"

This weekend is going to be it. *crosses fingers* I hope, I hope! At the very least, by next update. Then I'm going to set it aside for a whole week and not look at it. THEN pick it up again and go through it and do a quick overview to fix problem areas and add in anything else that is necessary. AND THEN...... it will be ready for the betas......

Excuse me while I pass out......

Kidding. I'm surprisingly feeling pretty good about all of it. I'm looking forward to it! It's been such a LOOOOONNNNGGGG road. I can't wait to reach the end of it. ^_^

I am making you a promise

Something I have been holding back on is telling you guys about my work in progress. When I made If Only We a priority, I put another story on the back burner. That story is Before We Knew. I started it summer of 2011 and it held all sorts of promise. It was one of those extraordinarily cute YA contemporaries that made me laugh while writing it. I couldn’t wait to get back to it once I finished If Only We.

During the year of revising and rewriting, I have been coming up with and plotting out many of my story ideas from over the years. When an inspiration came to mind, I would write it down so that I could be better prepared in the future. There were seven stories that are in that process. No matter how many of them I had, I kept telling myself that I would go right back to Before We Knew.

The next step was going to be another story that I hold close to my heart called Whatever This Is. I actually wanted to do that one for NaNoWriMo instead of If Only We. The only problem was that there were several plot holes I couldn’t fill in time, so I decided against it. Which was probably a good thing because I had an epiphany for that story that fills me with a certain kind of delight that can’t be put into words. That epiphany makes me want to write it all the more so.

In the last few months, a new story idea has come to me. This new story idea has proven to be a masterpiece of epic proportions. I had this little snippet of an idea I have wanted to do for years but had no avenue to fulfill it in until now. Almost every day I come up with a new scene or a new line of dialogue. It has gotten to the point where if I don’t get to really writing this soon, I am going to burst at the seams.

I wanted to get to Before We Knew, or even Whatever This Is, after If Only We. Then inspiration threw me a curve ball and has told me otherwise. This new story idea has become a work in progress that is taking priority in my writing life.

I want so much to tell you guys all about it… but I don’t want to divulge too much too soon. It’s still in the beginning stages and I haven’t quite gotten all the details figured out.

Here is my promise though: Once I have finished If Only We, I am going to treat you guys to a sneak peek at a few details of my work in progress, including the title.

So stay tuned if you want to find out more!

If Only We - current word count is 50,053.

BROKE 50,000!!! WOOT!!! I am so excited over this. It feels good to reach this point again, but with much better words. *crosses fingers* I hope I can keep this up!!!

Something I have learned as a writer

If Only We started out as a rough (VERY rough) idea in my head. I knew approximately where I wanted to go and some of the scenes that would take place. November 2011’s NaNoWriMo was a rocky road for that idea. I got somewhere, a place I had never been… 50,000 words…. It was amazing. And impressive that I managed to reach that goal.

Once I began to go through that now rough (VERY rough) draft, I realized how little I had gotten accomplished. It was messy. Oh boy, was it messy. Since I had a vague understanding of my characters and the plot, I kept writing the same scenes in different ways. It kept my word count going, but I was left with the task of filling in all the blanks. 2012’s revision process has been one-half revision and one-half writing. To be completely honest, it has been backbreaking at times to get through certain sections. There were some days I wanted to throw the words to the wind and go back in time to October 2011 and tell myself to actually prepare for November instead of dawdling around until the last minute.

As I look over all these many (oh so MANY) weeks of revising and writing, I can’t help but feel like I’m running on ice. I have spent a whole year attempting to finish this novel. A whole year. 365 days. Am I close to being done? The word I tell myself at this point to answer that question is “Hardly.” That word makes me depressed, and being depressed makes sitting down to write much harder. When writing becomes harder, you tend to convince yourself that your words suck. When you think your words suck, you wonder why you even bother.

Despite all those days of wanting to punch a wall or sob into a pillow, there is something that keeps me from giving up. Maybe it’s the fact that I am so determined not to fail. Maybe it’s the fact that I can’t not write. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m certifiably nuts. Whatever the case, I have come to a realization as a writer.

Here it is: One of the worst things a writer can do is over think the words. Yes, you want to write a good novel. But you can’t stress to the point of never finishing.

I have seen so many fellow writers struggle over the last couple years. A lot of us remain unpublished because we are wanting to share a perfect novel with the world. Even if you achieve perfection in a novel, you’re going to look back on it in a year and find a flaw. Is it worth holding on to a novel for a whole year to find that flaw before you publish it? In my opinion, it’s not. I have spent too much time anxious over If Only We. Imagining flaws that don’t exist just because I’m having a bad day or I’m comparing myself to someone else. The longer I worry about this one novel, the longer it will take for me to move on to a new one. And isn’t that what I want--to write another book? And another? And another?

Yes. Yes, it is.

I may not be completely finished with If Only We but I am not going to spend another year fixing it. It may not end up as perfect as my mind wants it to be but it will be something exceptional. Why? Because I wrote it. It’s mine. My story. My book. My novel.

And that is going to be a good feeling.

My FIRST Weekly Writing Update

Because what's a writing blog without a writing update?

As you have seen, my main focus as of right now is If Only We, a young adult contemporary novel. I am in the process of revising and rewriting this one.

If Only We - current word count is 47,752.

I am gaining a little bit on a couple scenes I recently figured out. I had an epiphany last night on a scene I started out this week, so I'll be tweaking it a teensy bit this weekend and continuing with the next scene. I am so close... I can feel the finale coming... and I can't wait to reach that point. It means I'm that one step closer to getting it out there for you to read.

I also started to write the first scene in my next project, but I need to tweak the spot where it starts a little bit. I think it needs to start about fifteen minutes later. And I need to come up with a more clever way to start it... hmm... ideas are brewing... It may not necessarily be the greatest idea to work on a second novel, but when the story is screaming at you to be told, sometimes you have to listen and just write. Once I finish If Only We, I'll start posting the word count for the new story... which shall remain nameless for a short time. Why? What's life without a little bit of suspense? ;)

2013 is going to be my year

In the beginning of 2012, I made the promise that I would finish and publish one novel by the end of the year. Needless to say, it didn't work out as planned. I was kinda sorta irritated with myself for not meeting that goal but then I realized that it was okay. Not that procrastinating is okay, just that I can't let myself be brought down by one minor setback. Writing isn't an easy feat sometimes. Sometimes it is a long journey that feels like it has no end. Yet, in that journey a writer can find themselves. A writer can bloom and blossom like a spring flower.

I'm okay with 2012 not being the year. In fact, I'm glad that it wasn't. I've grown so much as a writer in the last year and a half and I feel the writing I get done now is ten times better than it was in the beginning.

You read my plans for this year last week. I have a lot of writing and publishing goals in mind and I am determined to make them a reality in 2013.

Something else that is going to be a priority can be read about on my book blog today. Simply put, I want to really start living my life and be more positive. I've spent a lot of my twenties dwelling on things and sitting around doing nothing.

It's time for change.

Along with all my writer-ly goals of 2013, I also have a list of other goals too. Like taking a photo every day for a year, learn sign language, finish a whole bottle of nail polish, bake a perfect batch of cookies (from scratch, which I've never done by myself), and oh so much more.

It's time to stop being so afraid and start living instead.

From now on, you will not only be reading and seeing my writing progress, but also some little snippets of the great and fun things I'm going to do in 2013.

Life starts now.
